Price for a shop to put a posi in

What will a shop charge to put a posi into my car? I have a ten bolt with 2.73's. I would probably just get a posi that is for the 2.73's so I could use my gears. If I can't do that, what will they charge for a gear swap too? I want to put it in myself but my auto shop at school doesn't have all the right tools and we wouldn't know what to do. I'd like a ballpark estimate for the price of putting the posi in and one for putting it in and installing new gears. What gears would be good for a street driven car that I am going to beef up a little? I was thinking 3.23's or something around there. Thanks.

you can swap ring gears to the new carrier. it should only be a hour or so flat rate.

You should have them verify the gear pattern and backlash while they're in there. I'd say about $150 max.

How difficult is it for a complete novice to install gears and a posi unit and check the gear pattern and backlash?

Thanks

Personally I don't think it's that hard as long as you have the right tools. I'd highly recommend a Randy's Ring and pinion install guide too. It is 16 pages of pure gold. They send one with their Yukon gear sets and master install kits.

Are the Yukon gears any good? Do they hold up pretty well?

They are all I use anymore. The price is the lowest I've seen for gears of OEM quality. I use Randy's for everything. They only sell quality made in the USA parts, only use Timken bearings, and thier prices are the best I've seen, plus the service is outstanding.

So the price for a shop to put in a posi, and new gears would be around 150? What would the parts cost, and how long would my car be in there?

Just depends. We charge a bit more then that but no gear set goes in without changing all bearings and seals. The hot ticket would be to get a junkyard V6 rear end in 3.23 or 3.42 flavor and install a powertrax unit. This way you learn somthing and have a nice solid posi rear that isnt going to grenade with a real engine

Gears are about $170 and an Eaton posi is $350 or so. You can get a takeout posi for like $99 (SLP), but you need 28 spline axels to use it if you don't already have them. The complete install kit is about $150 with wheel bearings and seals. All prices are from Randy's Ring and Pinion.
