I'm putting a pretty much race setup Th350 in my firebird complete with 3,200 stall converter...this is NOT a daily driver street car, so I don't need to dick around with getting a speedo to work. Obviously, since the car is an 88, I dont have the appropriate speedo cable. Will that place that the speedo cable threads onto leak if I don't put a cable on it?? Can I just RTV the whole thing shut somehow or put a plug in it?

I think that what I did on my Chris. I just pulled out the speedo assembly & removed the little plastic gear, than sealed the hole where the gear went, and reinstalled the plugged & gearless assembly.
I made a little placard taped to my dash that converts RPM & current gear to speed. I only use it when I go out for a local road test. The privileges to living in the boonies, but I still have to look out for the county mounties.
