Please!!!Need trans help a/sa/p (kinda long)

hey guys.. Installed a transgo jr shift improver kit yesterday b/c my tv valve was sticking.. ('85 700r4) upon reinstalling the valvebody, there was a rod hanging down on the driver's side that I wasnt sure where it went b/c it wasnt hangin when I dropped the pan. I attached a pic. It's kinda hard to see, but you can see the shadow of it against the torque converter/flywheel.. It is connected to that sprocket that the fork rides on when you shift gears.. Now, I also noticed a long piston in the valvebody, right next to the rod. It slides out of the V.B. completely on one side(front) and partially on the other (rear).. I tried connecting the rod to that piston b/c it it a hole in it and just seemed like the rod was suppose to push/pull that piston as you shift gears.. But, when I pull the shift lever all the way, the rod falls out.. played with it for a while, but then just put the rod back in the piston and didnt pull the lever all the way.. It's the only place I can see this thing having to go.

Is it where it goes?? or did I make a boo-boo..

Also, after I replaced the filter, and was done with everything, I noticied that the old filter didnt have an o-ring on it.. but I installed the new one fine.. Could I have pushed it far up in there? will this cause any damage? or will I be ok just leaving it??

I would really appreciate any advise you guys could offer. This was my first time working on a tranny and I know I probably made some mistakes.. I still havent put in any fluid, so If I need to pull the pan again, no big deal. Would rather wait for some replys b4 putting in the fluid and testing the trans.. Hopefully, I didnt make things worse..

if I am remembering correctly... the rod attached to the actualy shift mechanism inside the tranny... it slips on the end of a little valve that goes in the first valve on the valve body... it controls where the fluid is directed to when you move the lever... it is a real pain in the *** to get back on with the tranny in the car.... you have to take the valve body off to do it tho, that is the easiest way.... and as far as the o-ring goes, they like to stay... get it out, or you could run the risk of your new filter coming off and frying your trans.

I will try to take a picture of how that whole assembly goes back together, but I dont know if I will be able to today

You need to drop the valve body and realign the manual lever with the linkage first, then reinstall together.

Thanks guys.. I had figured it out. Had to drop the pan again b/c when I went to shift gears, it did nothing. So I figured that rod was my problem.. I got it hooked up right this time.. And yes, it was a MAJOR PITA!!! But I got it done.. Refilled the fluid, and she shifted into gear. Havent gotten to test drive it, but will do that tomorrow.. I put in 6 quarts, seems to be reading full with the engine warm.. It's hard to tell b/c the fluid is so clear.. Is 6 quarts enough fluid??

As far as the filter, I tried getting out the old o-ring, but couldnt see it.. (my car is on jackstands).. But the new filter has an o-ring & it was on it.. It felt pretty secure, so I let it be.. I dont think it will come off, hopefully not.

One thing I didnt do was hook up my pressure guage to get readings when I go for the test drive.. If I do that now, I assume I am going to get fluid all over the place when I remove that fitting, right? we'll see.. If she doesnt feel right when I drive it, then I'll use the guage to see what is going on..

thanks for the help guys..
