I am looking at a second Z-28 (for myself this time) the first one I bought for my 16 year old and having fun with it, however it's not mine.

Anyway I found this 84 Z in my neighborhood, it has been sitting for a year now for sale. I have been looking at it for a month. The car is in really good shape with 90K on it. The only problem is the car starts and runs great until you put it in gear. The whole car moves from the hard clunk and it stalls. I have tried all gears including reverse. The thing just quits. I am thinking the torque converter is locked up.

I can get the car for $500.00 so even if the trans is bad I can invest the money into it.

Does it sound like the converter to you ???

 

it doesnt matter whats wrong,just get it and check the usual suspects(tune up,vaccum leaks,wrong idle speed,the works)for $500 bucks you cant go wrong if the body is in good shape

 

unplug it and see if that fixes it if you think it's the TC locked up. i'd guess something in the rear.

 

How do you unplug the torque converter ?
