Don't have to do anything, just put them in.

you can't replace a 26 spline axle wit ha 28 spline without changing the carrier to match the axle spline.
That's ede's response from my post... i was wondering the same thing, cuz that SLP take-off unit is lookin pretty nice. Check out the post.

My post: need some rear-end advice...

Everyone that I have asked says the carrier doesn't matter as long as it is a stage 3 carrier. But I am 100% because I haven't done the mod, but I will be in the next couple of months.

hmm... from what i've gathered u need to get a carrier to match the spline count, in addition to the gears. The carrier series depends on the gears.

3.23 and above gears need 3 series carrier, anything below need 2 series.

I'm not positive, but that was my understanding.

But you can have a series 3 carrier and 26 spline axles. Are there different series 3 carriers?

Now this really sucks. So I am going to have to replace pretty much the whole rearend in order to replace the differential with the one from SLP. That's going to cost more than a new 26 spline differential.

yep im right there with u... the SLP unit was looking damn good, but i guess im just gonna stick with the 26-spline and get a new limited slip differential.

no no no no no.... stop talkin crazy. go to the junkyard, look for an 89-92 (correct me on the year if I'm wrong) and gank the axles like a hobo at the breadline. they'll fit right in, and you'll have a little better axles that fit the takeoff posi. or, you could just buy a whole damn 4th gen rear from f-body warehouse. PM me if you want to contact them. posi/disc rears with 3.23's or 3.42's go for $150 through them.

Are u positive? Many of the people ive talked to say that they dont fit right in, and a lot say they do.

Has anyone here personally done the 26 to 28-spline axle swap? If so, please post! I dont want to waste my money by buying a 26 spline rear if i could have just as easily gotten a 28-spline.

about 90% sure the axles will work. you could also ask around here, as there's bound to be someone who's DONE it. have you thought about a 4th gen rear swap?

Okay, so if I replace the differential with the SLP Zexel-Torsen I do not have to replace the carrier, right? According to their website it all come together, the carrier and the differential. It does look like all I need is two new axles.

The SLP taeoff is series 3, and uses 28 spline axles. If you havea series 3 rear (3.23 or higher) you just need 28 spline axles. NOTHING ELSE.

carrier=differential. you can't get one without the other. so yeah, if you want the zex, get it, and two axles, and 3-series gears. (3.23's, 3.42's, etc.)

That mighta been adding to my confusion... carrier = differential. gotcha.

I've got a lot to learn... lol

man, I'll tell you this: just when you think you know more than most, you learn a LOT. last night, a girl taught me evrything i didn't know about nitrous.... and WHY forged is better than hyper. i just always knew forged was better, but never why. but i do now. learning is what hot rodding is all about, brutha.

I got a new Gov-Loc of ebay for $50.00, it was a 28 spline unit. My 87 T/A had 26 spline axles. I bought a set of 28 spline alloy axles from Moser. They worked with the new 28 spline diff in the old 26 spline housing just fine, with no modifications to the old housing required.
