speedo gear question
ok... i bought my 91Z, and the speedo hasnt worked.. i ordered the 37 tooth red gear that would be for the 700r4 tranny and 2.73 rear gears... problem.. still doesnt work.. looked into the tailshaft and it looks like the gear in there is a purleish, grey gear with like 7 teeth.. can that be right and how would i get my speedo to work?? dont see how there would be a 7 tooth gear on the 700r4.. i know the engine and tranny are not original.. as it is now a 5.7 and the tranny looks like it was with the engine from whatever it came from... any help please... thanks

ok.. what i just said doesnt make sence ... lol.. what i mean when i look thru the hole i see 7 teeth lengthwise not sure if i can tell how many teeth are on there without pulling the tailshaft... and to clearify further.. i have changed the vss also.. and have the same results...with a 37 or 38 tooth gear the speedo doesnt work though at times it does and goes to about 25 and stops and the ses light comes on... with a 4 tooth gear it works but doesnt read correct.. like 25 mph when i am doing like 50... both vss's give same results... and i have tried 2 different clusters. still same result.. not sure what else to try or do to make it work.

Opps sorry didnt read post right, maybe an open connection or intermittent? Or doesnt the ECm buffer the VSS for the dash? Or was that for the cruise control?

Assuming you have a 26" tire (245-50-16) you should use a red(17 tooth) drive gear and white(36 tooth) driven gear. I got this from the TCIauto page. http://tciauto.com/tech_info/speedo_gears.htm
