Trans advice for 87 camaro

ok... I have an 87 camaro... t-tops.... factory 305 tbi... I wanna play!

Here is the plans....

install ground effects, new spoiler, big cowl hood...

I have a sbc 400 that is dying for some TLC. Planning on ~400hp(mild build)

Going to either change the rear end out for a 12 bolt or beef up a 10 bolt posi that I have laying around(best parts available)

lower the car 1-2"

good tires and wheels

drive shaft loop

subframe connectors

new sway bars and such.

Now the question... with everything setup correctly all I am left scratching my head on is the trans... I am used to older cars that this and using thm350 or 400 trans... Can I get one in this 87? Will the stock trans, if rebuilt, handle the horsepower and torque? The trans will have a manual/auto valve on it and be attached to a B&M mega shifter no matter which trans is used...

Thanks

Dustin

Properly built, the TH700-R4 will handle 400 HP. Just not as long as a TH400 or TH350 or TH200-4R.

if your going to use this on the street, i would definetly use a 700 no questions asked

and for the rear, i just read the new super chevy and it turns out that most people who buy the 12 bolt to swap out the 10 bolt, dont even need it. that 10 bolt can handle up too 450 RW hp with a proper build (axels, bearings, gears, diff cover) and ive seen people running big blocks with a lot of power to a 9 bolt rear. the 12 bolts and ford 9s are really for serious dragers IMO

May 2004 issue of Chevy High Performance has an article on beefing up the 7-1/2" 10-bolt. Pretty much says the same things as our very own tech article https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/t...nguprear.shtml , except the mag doesn't change out the crush sleeve with the spacer.
