Eaton vs. Torsen

I've been thinking recently about the advantages each has. I like the eaton the best out of the clutch type posi units. What I don't like about the cluth units though is how the disks can wear down. When they wear down, where are the shavings and dust doing? Right into the oil. This can't be good. The torsen's don't have this problem as they are a gear type posi. I don't like the fact that the gear units take tq to lock them though. This in turn would create more stress on the unit and provide slightly less traction than the eaton unit. Which outweighs the other though?

Go with the Eaton. Plate wear is negligable. Torsen's, especially the HD units will not stand up to competition use. Metal shavings from Torsen gears will causes far more damage than a lityle Carbon " dust ".

Do a search for Torsen on this page. Lots of info on the Pro's and Cons.

PS: I'm a Torsen advocate ( For AutoCross and Road Racing. Torsen.... not meant for Drag Racing. Ask Muggsy about his ), but unfortunately they will not stand up to competition use ( HD units ) becuase of the small carrier size of our diffs.

I already have the eaton because it's the best clutch unit hands down and I got a great deal on it. I was just thinking about the advantages/disadvantages to each and if the torsen is better i'll sell it. As far as I know, the torsen unit acts as an open rear until one whel starts to lose traction and it applies power to the other, whereas the eaton gives traction to both wheels no matter what, correct? If you are launching at the strip does the torsen keep switching from 1 wheel to the other the whole way based on traction? Does it give power to both wheels at the same time at all?

In a straight line, such as Drag Racing, a Torsen offers no advantage over a LSD\Posi. Both wheels will have power applied to them. Only difference is that a Posi senses differences in velocity and a Torsen senses difference in Torque. Both wheels with a Torsen will receive power....normally in a straight line it would be 50 percent of torque to each wheel.

Only time a Torsen is benefitial in straight line acceleration, is if one wheel hit a patch of oil or water. A Torsen will tend to keep the car straighter... very nice for Road Racing, especially if you hit a puddle at high speed on the power. A posi can snap you sideways....a Torsen will not.

However...since you don't often Drag Race in the wet...that advantage is moot. Since an Eaton is much more durable than a Torsen for Drag Racing I'd keep the Eaton.
