Clutch pedals.......whats the difference?
hi,
Can someone tell me what the difference is between a clutch pedal assembly from 82-83 and from 84-92. can a z bar clutch pedal be used with a hydraulic clutch and vice versa?
thanks
Greg

Car: 83 Trans Am
Engine: 355 4 bolt main, One day it will run.
Transmission: T-5
the later clutch assembly, post 84, is hydraulic. the 82-83 are mechanical, and utilize a pivit ball on the block. i know that somtime in the 80's they stoped drilling and tapping the block for that ball, so if your thinking of converting, your gona run into a problem.
Ive had both, and i realy dont have a prefrence. i kinda like the idea of the mechanical clutch because i had a ton of problems with my hydraulics.

The location and attachment of the actuator rod.
No they will not interchange.
I detested the mechanical clutch in my 83. It had all of the problems that those have always had, that I fought for decades before with 4-speeds; friction and binding, lost motion from the engine & trans getting pushed rearwards on their mounts, etc. I swapped it to hydraulic the minute I found a setup in the boneyard. It's so much better it isn't even like driving the same car.

I'll direct this at RB:
I noticed on a set of hydraulic pedals that there was a hole drilled in the clutch pedal in addition to the normal stud for the master cylinder rod. Is that a leftover hole for an upper mechanical pushrod?

Yeah? I have 305s and 350s through 1988 and all have it. Hmmm.
I prefer hydraulic but that doesn't preclude me from doing mechanical

My car gas a 84 or 85 setup in it, including the pedal bracket (where the switch mounts), the pedals, etc. The switch has a long plastic rod that goes through the middle of it, that's sort of L-shaped; the short end of the L clips into the pedal, and makes the whole rod slide through the body of the switch as you push the clutch.
I don't recall what the 83 setup was. Seems like it wasn't too different actually, but I could be wrong.
