Does my 87 Z28 have a Posi

I planned to change the rear axle oil and I have the 10-bolt cover ; 3 on each side and 2 on top & bottom.

Upon inspecting the gearing inside the axle unit, I saw the pinion setup and attached horizontally to the right of the main gear(when i'm facing the front of the car) there is this cylinder like unit (which has about a quarter or slightly greater of an opening). Within this unit are a set of springs and two small bevel gear sets.

So is this a posi-rear. Can I use Mobil1 75w-90 or Redline 75w-90. Will I need the GM ls additive.

Thanks Sean

Sounds like definitely a posi. The springs are part of the clutch system for it. A non-posi would not have them.

Yes, and yes.

Cool RB thanks. I got the ls additive and plan to add either Mobil1/Redline 75w-90 synthetic.

Would anyone know how many quarts the axle holds.

Thanks Sean

Around 2 quarts.

Put the additive in first, than add the grease; have 3 quarts on hand. If you don't use the 3rd you can always take it back.

RB you're the man. Another quick question Sire.

The grease you refer to is that normal grease to add to the gear teeth prior to shutting the cover and puring in the additive oil and all.

Thanks Sean

No, I was talking about the 75W-90. Put on the cover, put in the whole bottle of the additive, then fill it the rest of the way with the gear lube / oil / grease / whatever you want to call it.
