What do you look for in a rear end
Sorry, guys for the stupid questions, but I am just starting to look at my rear end options and without a little background it is kinda hard to follow some of the posts I've been reading for the last 3 hours.
So here goes. I just took out the rear end from my 88 camaro which had a V6. I am not sure, but I think it is a 9-bolt. My goal is to put a manual T5 with ~400hp and to have disk brakes on all 4 wheels.
Does it make sense to keep this rear and rebuild it? Put different gears in? I think I've seen people do disk brake conversion on those, although that didn't appear easy. Or should I look for something else? I guess one option is to put in the entire 4th gen unit. Would I be able to find something like that at a JY. What else should I be looking for?
TIA

I just popped a 3.73 10 bolt rear from a 97 maro with the pbr calipers in my car. Simple find at a JY, $350 with a liftetime full replacement/refund warranty.
If you're going to want different gears and disk brakes make it easy on yourself and just get it all as one.
However, if you decide to swap everything over I have a junk 3.23 posi 9 bolt with discs. If you want to buy the calipers I'll sell real cheap.

4th gen rear would be the easiest and cheapest way to go. 9 bolt would alos work but you'd be dealing with a very limited aftermarket for them. you could also step up to a moser or strange rear.
Thanks, guys. I guess I was thinking along the right lines. Next question is the ratio. I want this car to be somewhere in the middle between street and race-only, and with 5-speed, I was thinking 3.43 (if that's the right ratio, or close to that one). Does that sound about right? Or should I do lower/higher?
4th gen is a 10-bolt, right?
With what ratios did 4gens actually come? Is gear ratio something I would be able to change at a later time if I choose to do so, keeping as much as of everything else as possible?
