You may be thinking of the 4L60 which is the same thing as the 700R4. GM renamed the 700R4 to the 4L60 in 90 or 91 I forget. The 4L60E never came on a thirdgen.

4L60E is the electronic version of the 4L60(700r4) It requires a different ECM because it it electronically controled and shift points can be altered through the prom chip. Our 700r4's basically can be manipulated to run without any computer at all, just need a 12V hotwire feed to activate the lockup on the convertor.
700r4 is the tranny type and has always been distiguised through GM as code 4L60- its stamped on the side.

tranny
i have a 91 z28 auto so its the 4l60(700r4) and iam going to try to find a new tourqe converter for it, so will any 30 spline aftermarket converter that says for gm 700r4 work on mine or do i need a special one?? kinda confused now lol
billy, if you are looking for a good converter, OPT {Oragon preformance trans} sells their stuff on ebay. Off ebay there is a link to the tranny store. They sell a furnace braized converter with torrington bearings in it for about $120 shipped to your door. It is warrantied up to 525hp. I have it in over a dozen units, two of them are on big blocks. I would reccomend this unit for almost everyone with a 700r.
The last few posts are right the 700r4- 4l60 ran up untill 94. 94 and newer is a 4l60-e which is an electronic shift. There are a few differences in the 93 700r4, The four pin connector for the converter lockup is a 5 pin connecter in 93 and the 3/4 pack plates were changed a little. 87 and older 700r4s dont have an auxillary valvebody on them.
The 4l60-e is also in a slightly different case. The rpo code on a 4l60-e is M30. A 4l60 or 700r4 is MD8.
Hope this helps

yes i was actually looking at them on ebay and thats why i posted here cause the person who replied to me from there said it would work in my z as long as it was not the 4l60, which was weird to me cause i thought they were the same as the 700r4, maybe i will email them again and see what they say
