Another 700R4 Shake
I get a real bad shake in my drivetrain over 70 mph, I'm unsure of the balance on the DS but think its in the trans.
I can put the car in neutral while at 70+ and the shake goes way down or away altogether.
The TV cable has been giving me problems that when I mash the throttle it will release a click or two (runs good on the first time
)
But then when I get off of it and try to give a little throttle it has to go to 3000 rpm before starting to put power to the wheels.
This is an aftermarket (supposed to be beefy) trans B&M made it.
I am hoping this is nothing serious
but would like some ideas.
Thanks in advance,
JP

Well....as far as the shake...I've heard of some problems similar to this, and I've never heard of a good explanation. I would be more likely to blame the problems on the torque converter or the driveshaft than the trans....maybe a broken impeller blade or something...I dont know, it's hard for me to imagine something inside a transmission causing a shake. I think if the shake was in the driveshaft, it makes sense for it to lessen when you put it into neutral I *think*....because that means, yes the d/s is still going to spin, and it's still connected to the trans...but it's not linked up to the engine now, so it's not going to transfer all that shake through the motor and into your steering wheel, etc... You'd probably still feel the vibrations in the shifter though, and on the trans tunnel...
But I'm no expert on transmissions, I'm just taking some stabs...
And if your're having to get up to 3000 rpms before you'll start to move.....hate to say it, but your trans is toast. Or if you keep adjusting the TV cable to make it act better again..well it WILL be toast soon...
Revving up like that is a sign of either very low line pressure, so much so that the transmission can't push the clutch packs together to make the thing go.....or the clutch packs are worn out altogether... That's assuming you have a STOCk torque converter. If you've got a stall converter, with a stall speed of maybe 2500-3000, well that's probably normal behavior.

The cable issue seems that the throttle stroke is longer than the cable stroke.
At WOT I pull on the cable too much and causes it to release in the holder (slightly stripping the teeth).
When I get out and readjust back to where it should be, its fine.
It is low line pressure that lets it rev so high. It makes it like a real high stall converter for when I happen to cross a Rustang path
.
I will look into putting a spring on the cable or something to get rid of the problem, I'm just hoping the shake is not damage in progress!.
I am also going to see if I can pick up a balanced DS.
Maybe that is really the issue and it is masked when put in neutral, though I have decelled and accelled on it in gear and it seems to be the same vibration.
Also will get the tires re-balanced. Might have thrown a weight or two on the last couple of days of hard romping.
Thanks for the response Nixon1.

Sounds like a good plan of action. Oh and as far as the stall thing goes... A 3000 rpm launch won't do you any good when you've got clutch pack slip all the way through the rpm range. Still losing power, even if the launch feels ungodly.
Fix that problem before it eats your tranny for breakfast...lol

OH MY ....
Finally got to the bottom of this!
I wouldn't have believed it.
The car still made the shake and was now beginning to rattle at idle and in some light cruising situations. The TV cable had been causing most of my HARD shift problems and thought I was definatly breaking something when slamming second so hard.
I took my car into a local shop to have them check for broken fylwheel bolts thinking that had to be the problem.
Upon inspection and getting ready to pull the trans, the shop guy came to me and said ALL of the housing bolts were LOOSE !!!
He tightened them up for me and the rattle went away
I paid him $17 and told them I'd try it and see if the high speed shake got better.
Car ran 100+ super smooth now !!!
Just another instance of KISS (I'll play the stupid one this time)
