4th gen driveshaft length

Hey everyone,

I am planning to stick 4th gen rear end and driveshaft into my 88 camaro. 4th gens came with T56's which I think (not sure) are 4" longer than T5's, so would I be able to use that driveshaft with a T5 tranny?

not if it's 4" longer, unless you cut it to length

4th gen driveshafts are the same length as thirdgens, the axles also dont change the length of the driveshaft, unless you've got some kind of aftermarket 9" maybe....

And NO the OEM 93-97 T56 when installed into a thirdgen does not require a different length driveshaft, it isnt any longer, the trans may be longer itself, but the bellhousing is hella shorter, its the same length, the only time the length changes is with that aftermarket non OEM T56 setup.

Thanks guys, maybe I was reading the info from some aftermarket site.

The site said that because it was longer, the tranny x-member had to be moved back about 4" I guess that is not the case with 4th gens.

But you still need to make mods to the x-member when putting in T56, right? Different shape, but leave in the same spot?

The T-56 trans mount is several inches to the rear of the T-5 one. So some sort of mod is necessary. It can't be moved back like it can on a full-frame vehicle.

Drive shaft is the same for 3rd and 4th gen F cars. T-5 and T-56 are the same overall length.

Yes the mount location is different, the spohn or skulte crossmembers easily fix that problem.
