Rear end swap / gear swap question...

I have an 88 Iroc with the stock rear end. I know for a fact that it is a 2:77, but have no idea whether or not it is a posi. I was told that all 9 bolt rear came with limited slip, but I'm not so sure of that. Could someone clarify for me? If this is the case could someone point me to a set of replacement 4:11 gears for my current rear end.

I also have an option of a 4th gen rear complete with 3.42 slp rear with the etorsion posi. I can get this locally for ~$300, and could have the gears changed no prob.

If I can just do a gear swap on the stock rear, that would be the best for me, but if not I can go with the 4th gen.

Axle/Gears: 4th gen 10-bolt, posi, 3.42 ratio
find this button: click it, and follow the directions.

but in case you did a search, I'll answer anyway. jack up the rear of the car. let the rear hang there. now spim one tire. does the other tire spin the same way? or opposite? if it spins opposite, it's not posi. if it spins the same way, it's posi.

as far as gears. try www.9bolt.com . they may or may not have what you need. I swapped to a 4th gen rear, so I've never used the site, but that's what other people have recommended to me. good luck.

To get to 4.11 gears with your 9bolt your going to have to swap out the carrier too because its only a 2 series and 3.27 and up requires a 3 series carrier. Im thinking youd be better off with the 4th gen rearend because its the cheapest option because 9 bolt parts are expensive.

If your 9 bolt is posi there should be a tag under one of the bolts on the rearend that should say so, may be a little rusty though.
