Anyone hear rebuilt a 700R4 ? How hard?
My friend wants to rebuild his 700R4 in his 90 IROC. How hard is it? I rebuilt my T-5 in my Mustang myself but I know there is alot more to an auto trans. I work at a GM dealer in parts so I know there is quite a bit too them. I ask the mechanics but you may know how that goes. They think since I'm "just a parts guy" that I'm dumb. Of course I've done alot more work on cars than half the guys in the shop!!
Thanks!

Not to hard if you have the special tools and a good rebuild manual. I used a Haynes 700R4 rebuild manual and the GM factory service manual. I also purchase the Low Reverse clutch spring compressor, the over run clutch spring compressor, input clutch assembly seal installer and sizer. Many other tools are spec'd but I didn't use them, use common tools. I recommend buying the Hughes complete rebuilt kit with Red Alto Race Frictions (summit carries). It also has a kevlar 2-4 band. Don't waste your time with the B&M Trans Kit (OK, but not heavy duty enough). I used the B&M Transkit, upgraded to the Alto Red 9 friction 3-4 clutch pack, and a corvette 2-4 servo (more apply pressure). Car will bark third gear with BFG Drag Radials. Just follow all directions and set all clearances correctly. I bought the special tools from Snap-On, may be available elsewhere.
Let me know if I can help.

I did mine and it was not bad at all. I had never seen the inside of an auto transmission other than installing a shift kit. I took it over to my Dad's place and we rebuilt it. (dad was an Allison auto guy in the 70's and 80's) I rebuilt it with his supervision. I made a giant C-clamp to remove the servo cover and it also worked for compressing some of the clutches. Dad also had the special snap ring pliers, they are not like a standard snap ring pliers. You might be able to pick those up at sears.
Get an ASTG manual, and the proper tools, then jump into it. I wouldn't do it if it is your daily driver though, because things have a way of taking longer than expected and you are left without a car. I had my tranny out for 2 months, but it was not priority and my TransAm is just for fun. It has been down for 1.5 years so far but I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnle.
