Converter recommendation

I'm planning on putting an SD/TPI on my '85 SS/L69 that has a 2004R and 3.73's. Any recommendations on what stall and size to get? This will just be a street car but I want to be able to get the most from the TPI and the stock converter (~1800 stall) probably won't do it.
Thanks,
Larry.

With a stock cam and TPI, a stock stall should be fine for street use.

Now, if you were taking it to Bandimere regularly, I'd say, "When you floor it, note what RPMs it really starts to kick in. Get a converter of that stall speed."

I hadn't thought about bandimere in years.
Last time I was there was in '79, lot of fun though.
You have any idea what the stock stall is in the 305 TPI's with the 700R4's? Might give me something to compare it to.
Larry.

Have you had it dynoed? If not, get it dynoed and find out what RPM the TQ peaks at. That RPM-300 is the stall that you want to get. Although the TC is the best mod you can do for an automatic, if you plan on doing a lot a work to the motor, it should be one of the last things you do if you plan on adjusting your torque curve.

Putting it on the dyno sounds like a good idea, thanks. (Of course I have to get it installed first, this winter I hope. ) As far as any future mods it'll just be a street car with the stock L69 and TPI.
Larry.
