Ford 9" in the paper - What do I need to know?
Ford 9" in the paper - What do I need to know?
In the classifieds in my town, there's a Ford 9" rearend listed for $200.
All the ad says is that it's 31 spline and in very good condition.
Can I run this in a 90 firebird? Is there anything I need to ask the seller (aside from the obvious: gear ratio and is it posi)?
How hard is it to install one of these on a third gen?
Thanks in advance!

Practically all F*rds all through the 60s and well into the 70s had the 9" rear.
A stock one is a POS. It's no better than any other rear. Definitely not worth the trouble of trying to graunch into your car.
The good thing about them, is that the way they're designed makes it a good platform for aftermarket ingenuity and improvement.
Bottom line: you don't want a stock one (which is likely what it is, and overpriced at that), you want an aftermarket one.
The guy obviously wrote the ad that way, fishing for somebody looking for "F*rd 9-inch" rather than "76 Granada rear end" or whatever kind of car it's for.

Thanks, RB83L69.
I figured it was too good to be true. Oh well.
I've got the 2.73 open stock in my bird right now, but I'm dropping an LT1 in place of the LO3 soon (in fact its in my garage now), so I think a new rearend is in my future....
If I just change the gears to 3.43's or 3.73's, no posi tho
will my 10-bolt hold up? I'll probably be making around 350 hp....
Thanks!
