3.23 rear end ratio worth it

Hey guys,

I found 3.23 posi rear end from 94 V8 automatic. Is it worth it for me to take that hook it up to ZZ4 GM crate with T56? Originally I was thinking, 3.42 or 3.73 since T56 has the .5 6th gear, but I don't know how much worse would this rear end be.

Application would be some strip (I am not building the car for just that), some more road racing. Also looking for streetable

Any thoughts?

3.73 is the minimum gear you should use with a .50 sixth T56. I've driven those trannies with 3.23, 3.42, 3.73, 3.90 and 4.11 gears and I can positively say that 3.23 just sucks with one.

I agree with jmd; I just have the stock gears in my 83 car (3.73) which now has a T-56, and 6th is useless at less than 70 mph. I wish I had more gear.

On the other hand, my motor is carbed, so its power band is MUCH higher than a TBI or TPI motor; so for one of those, 3.73s might be about right. Especially a 350 TPI.

Thanks, guys. You've confirmed what I was already suspecting.

The reason I was considering that rear is that they were selling it for $400, as opposed to $750 at a different j/y. But it could be because of the ratio difference too.

Is it possible/worth it to get the rear and change gears to get 3.73? If it ends up around $700, either way, I'd say it would be worth it because I would take the time to recondition it, not just take from the junkyard.

Either way, when I do find one, does it make sence to spend a week or five taking it apart and replacing all wearable parts?
