gear help
Ok just wondering if 3:23's (i think there 3:23's i counted 42 and 12 on the ring and pinion) from a 93 94 firebird would fit on the rear i got now which are 2:73's? from a 87 88 firebird.
on the 2:73's one full rotation of the wheel i came up with 2 1/2 turns on the driveshaft so i assume they are 2:73's
thanks

The gears could work, but it's probably not going to be a drop-in deal. Reason being, is that you most likely have a 2-series carrier. You'll need a 3-series carrier, to work with those 3.23s. Alternatively, you can buy aftermarket gears that are made to a different thickness, so as to work with the 2-series carrier you have. Disadvantage to those "crossover" gears is that they normally cost quite a bit more than standard gears.
Also be aware that the newer carriers (i.e '89 or later for GM), will most likely be made for 28-spline axles. Your rearend, if it was in fact from '87 or '88, and still in original form, will have 26-spline axles. Probably worth opening things up, and counting splines before buying parts, to be sure everything will match.
Also, if you find a good deal on a 28-spline 3-series carrier, it might be less money overall to buy new axle shafts to match, rather than paying full market price for a new 26-spline carrier.
