Car wont move, please help

well latly my car has been getting slower, and when it whould shift sometimes if whould basicly pause in the middle of the shift (in neutral) then shift into the next gear. then one day it started getting realy bad and then it just stoped moving, if i kept the engine around 3500 rpms it whould sorta go a lil then go into neutral again, and in neural i heard a grinding sound. a friend said it chould be a cracked torque converter and it whuold be an easy fix, and opinions?

Checked the fluid level? What does it look and smell like? Heh, cracked converter, mine did that and made a 3 foot wide path of fluid on the road. There was maybe 1/4 of a quart left in the transmission, the rest was on the ground.

new info

cant put it in park (shifter cables messed up) but i checked the fluid in neutral and it was fine, makes grindin noise *sometimes* drove it home from where it was stuck, at first it shifted out of first into second and stayed there, for the rest of the time it was barly catching and whould move a lil then stop catching, i basicly did like 10-15mph all the way home. basicly it worked when it felt like working but never shifted. any ideas?

Broke my torque converter about a month ago, it was very similar, no grinding noise though. I'd say torque converter, but it could be something else in the transmission, definitely gonna have to pull it, it's the only one way to find out.

get the shifter cable fixed then check the tv cable and make sure its not broken or unhooked .....
are you sure the fluid is red in color and not burnt or brownish smells okay?
