RearEnd Whining..Help!!

STarted beginning of the week.. Got little worse day by day.. Now the rear end sounds like when a jet engine first winds up.. That high-pitched whining noise.. Doesnt go away in neutral, and doesnt go away period. Till I stop.. Very noticeable...

ANy idea what it could be? Wheel bearings? Carrier bearings? Gears not set up right?

About a year ago, I did the gear swap to 3.42.. At the time, I did not know you needed a dial indicator to set the bearing preload & pinion depth.. Just swapped the gears, and played with the shims till it felt good..

Got the car on the road in March.. There was always a slight whine, when I was driving, it would stop when I let off the gas.. So I didnt think it was the rear..

Now all of a sudden, my rear sounds like a jet engine.. Or better yet, you know when you go for the emissions inspection, and they run your car on the chassis dyno, it sounds like that whining noise of the big rollers also...

Can the rear lock up on me if I continue to drive it?
Anyone know of a reputable shop in, or close to NYC that can setup the gears? Maybe on Long Island?? Or staten Island?? I live in Brooklyn and dont know of any places that will do it.

Please help.
Thanks in Advance.
Joe

its an 8.5" 10-bolt that is on my 81Z28.. 3.42 posi .. It was a used ring & pinion I bought off of someone.. When I swapped gears, I re-used the pinion bearing b/c it was already pressed on, looked ok, and I didnt have to change the pinion depth.. Changed all other bearings, race, & wheel bearings & seals.. And of course a new gasket.. Used the Mobil 1 gear oil w/ a limited slip additive.. I did notice a little oil on the cover.. on the bottom, and at the top bolt.. but it doesnt leave stains on the ground, so it must be a slow, small leak..

Chances are, when i installed the gears I fudged it up and now gonna have to either get another rear or have a shop setup up this one, if they arent shot..

could be the inner pinion bearing, my 10-bolt was making the same noise for a while then I swaped it out for a 9-bolt on saturday, when I took apart the 10-bolt to see what was wrong with it I saw that the inner pinion bearing was wearing pretty bad and there was a little play in it againt the pinion
