700r4 rebuild screw up
I just finished my first 700r4 rebuild for my 85 chevy.
Parts used:
B&M 2000 stall lockup converter, transgo shift kit, .500 boost valve, Corvette Servo, new bushings. clutches, steels, soft parts and a kevlar band.
The trans was from a 90 suburban so I guess it would be a 4L60.
Anyhow I filled the trans with fluid started the engine and test ran it while it was still on the jack stands.
Problem 1:
Reverse would not move the tires unless I gave it about 2500 rpm
Problem 2:
Forward seemed OK shifting up to 3rd but not going into forth.
Problem 3:
ATF comming out of the vent tube.
Test run
Problem 1:
Reverse took way to much trottle to move truck.
Problem 2:
No forth gear
Problem 3:
ATF Fluid blowing out of vent tube.
Removed Trans for tear down
Found burnt ATF and the pan was full of clutch material.
Removed the Pump found both Stator seal rings damaged, they must have hung and tore while trying to seat pump.
Also found the Reverse input housing assembly missing one of the steel plates.
This model trans uses a angled plate rather that a waved plate this angled plate sets against the piston then a steel plate.
Is this right??
3/4 clutch pack was smoked.
All other clutches are OK
Is this the result of the damaged stator sealing rings?
Also would this cause the loss of reverse.
All other clutches are OK

I want to first thank Dana at Pro Built for his time and effort trying to help me out with this problem.
After I got home I started the process of checking out all the mods that the Transgo kit had me do.
Well I found the Problem as soon as I compared the pump with an old one side by side.
I LEFT OUT THE %^$#@Y(* Pressure Relief Spring and Check Ball out of the pump.
This was causing ATF to come out the Vent Tube. and no telling what else it was effecting.
I am still not out of the woods yet as I still have to put this thing back together and hope that every thing else is installed properly.
I even had our local 700r4 guru re-work the pump and he didn't notice that I had removed the spring and check ball.
I hope that this Information will be of some use for those that may try this themselves as I have and have the same type symptoms during the startup.
MAY your search help you with this one.
Thanks all
