Rearend Question

I'm just wondering. when someone is talking about 9-bolt 10-bolt rearends.. are they talking about the bolts on the back cover itself?

just a quick question.

I think my rearend is at primary stages of letting go. and I'm gonna start pricing parts for it. Or if there is anyone here that could give me a decent price on an extra one they have, I'd be very greatfull.

Yes, 9-10bolt refers to the number of bolts on the cover........

No problem, check out some local boards for a rearend, but this would be a great time to upgrade to a 4th gen rear with disc's and posi since they can be had for $200-$400

I already have disks, does that mean I already have a 4th gen rearend?

Nope, thirdgen rearend's came with disc's as well, however when you have a "drum" rearend, it's often cheaper to get an entire new 4th gen rear instead of trying to upgrade it.....

There is alot of information about rearend's on the Transmission and Drivetrain board, or even on the main page which will list all the differenct options you could have for an IROC........

If you are planning on staying with you current wheels, you'll need a thirdgen rearend.....which is ultimatly cheaper

thnx for the info.


Hmmm just another question. The reason why I think my rearend may be going. is on my way home from work last night I started to hear a whining noise at high speed (70-100 Km/h) I slowed down and in between each shift I could feel a slight vibration in the shifting lever. and heard a slight grinding while in lower gears and speed.


anyone have some info for me on this? Ever happen to anyone on here?

I'll check for answers when I get back home from work. thanks guys

This is correct. The put the same number of bolt on the cover but it is called a 10 bolt because of the ring gear bolts.

Sorry for not going into detail fellas.....

The bolt cover is the easiest and most commonly used way of identifying rear ends, however when you go into detail, the amount of ring gear bolts determine the amount of cover bolts...as mentioned above....

Can't blame a business guy for giving a top-level overview.......

actualy some of the car's in the 60's did come with 12 bolts and had 10 bolt covers.. so yea that was misinformation

cant always go buy how many bolts are on the cover
