Can gears be set-up in an axle OFF the car?

Can gears be set-up in an axle OFF the car?

...just like the title says.

...can you set up gears in an rear axle while the rear is outta the car?


*edit*...let me clarify, I know you can simply bolt it all together, I'm wondering if all the backspacing measurements etc. can be done properly...

Yes.

Having the sheet metal wrapped around the rear, or not, doesn't affect how the moving parts fit in the housing.

Think about how the factory does it.

yeah and it's a lot easier to do without having to get under the car to work.

Cool.

I would've thought that you could, but didn't know if there were backspacing/preload issues and things like that to worry about.

I've never done anything to the rear-axle before, and I may try a gear swap myself.... ....we'll see.

My friend does a lot of gears and prefers to get the rear axle by itself. that way he can do the gears without waiting on using a lift at the shop.

Abubaca, I am also planning a gear swap to do sometime in the next half a year. Post some pictures and stuff when you get started/finished. I am curious how this thing is going to go
