Rear End Gear ID

OK, I recently got my 82 T-top Camaro. I was told it has a Posi traction rear end. Well, to test it, i ate the hell out of my new Daytona's and looked at my back body panels to see rubber on each side, sprayed from the tire, so my assumption is that it is Posi. Anyways, consdiering it is Posi, I need to find out a way to see what gears it has. It is the stock 10-bolt rear end but I have no idea what gears it has in it. I will be taking the Diff. cover off and replacing it with a chrome one here soon, like within a few days and I was wondering if there was a way to tell once the cover is off. any help is appreciated, Id like to know, so I can boast about my rear end....or decide how to beef it up thanks.

why are ya replacing it with a chrome one?you can't even see the diff. unless your car is raised inthe back?

you can jack up the rear so that it spins freely and then count the teeth on the ring, look up wich gear combo has that many teeth on the ring and that should tell ya what gearing you have. but there is probably a better way LOL.

Look inside the little window in the carrier. If you see nothing but a pin about ¾" in diameter and 4 small gears, you don't have posi. If you see something like this pic (although yours probably wouldn't look exactly like this one), it's posi.

The "2 stripe" thing is not conclusive. Too many false positives.

Count the gear teeth on the ring and pinion. Divide the number on the ring by the number on the pinion. For example, you might see 15 on the pinion, and 41 on the ring; that's 41/15, or 2.733333333, commonly referred to as 2.73.

Don't screw around with a chrome cover; concentrate your money on things that actually improve the car somehow, instead of installing a new leak. You'll enjoy your car alot more if you approach it that way.

Well the chrome cover is brand new and i got it a long time ago for like 10 bucks. Considering this car doesnt have exhaust after the rear end and I hve tall fat tires, u can see the rear end pretty good if u are behind it. But besides that, thanbks for all the help, ill he sure to let everyone know on my rear end gears. thanks.

He he, from an old junkyard goat, here is the EASY way to tell what you have.

Jack up the back of the car until both wheels are off the ground, Put in neutral.

Do you have a posi? Spin 1 wheel. If the opposite wheel spins the same direction, you have posi. If it doesn't spin or spins the opposite direction, you don't have posi. (you have to understand how differentials work to know why this works)

What are your gears? Get a piece of chalk. Mark the rear wheel, and the driveshaft. Turn the rear wheel 1 revolution, and count the number of rotations of the driveshaft. If it turns 3 1/2 times, you have 3:55 gears. If it turns a little over 4 turns, you have 4:11's, if it turns 2 1/2 times, you need another set of gears!!

Good luck and have fun!
