1) Counting the bolts on the rear cover will tell you the general type.
2) Remove said bolts & cover, there will be #'s stamped on the pinion and ring gears telling you the ratio. Presence or absence of springs in the carrier will tell you open or posi.
This is the sure-fire method. There is also a 3-character code stamped on the top of the passenger side axle tube that can be decoded to tell you at least what it was at one time.

its not the stock rear.. its a 10 bolt.. its got 3.73's in it, its an open... i just dont know what year it came from... so im not sure if it has 26 or 28 spline axles...
