Tranny seems to be shifting funny

Hello,

I have a tranny question. I just recently bought an '82 Trans AM that has a 700-R4 with a shift kit. I don't know what kind of kit it has but it doesn't seem like it's shifting right. When it shifts to 2nd it is very hard which I believe is normal but it does this when I'm going at slow speeds. The RPM's will also kind of hang upto about 2500 and then it will shift. Again I'm told this is normal. However if I floor it sometimes I don't even feel the shift in second at all, or it is very smooth. All other gears shift smooth no matter what. I think I've read that some kits firm up only the 1-2 shift. I can never chirp the tires shifting in to 2nd at WOT, but usually it will low speeds. You would think this would come easy with the 406 I have and 9 bolt posi. It does have 3.43 gears maybe this is a problem?? I don't know what kind of converter I have...I think 2500 stall speed. Also, sometimes at downshift at WOT from 3rd to 2nd the RPM's go up like normal for the downshift but at the shift point back to third they almost jump up higher during the shift and then go back down. People say it's because of the shift kit but I don't know, it just doesn't feel right. I've always had manual cars and don't know too much about automatics. I read a post about TV cable adjustments. Would this be something I should look into?

1. check the fluid, if it appears dirty, change the filter. 2. adjust the tv cable. but i dont know too much about autos either, so.....

I checked the fluid, it's clean. Where do I adjust the TV cable? My throttle cable is hooked to the carb linkage with a black clip. This clip is held to the cable with a metal stopper with a screw in the middle of it. If I take the screw out I can shorten or lengthen the cable. In the closed throttle position there is a little slack in the cable. Should the cable be pretty tight or what?
