700R-4 questions. Tried a search...

Hello. Ive recently been having a problem with my 87 TA. My problem sounds so much like everyone else's problem as far as shifting goes...but my main question is a little different. Right now, at part throttle she wont shift until around 3500. Doesnt really bang into gear, but much harder than it should. This problem arose over night. Was running/driving great...parked her, now the shifting problem. TV cable right? On the way home from where the problem started, it started shifting normal again. Same as it always did. Then...a few minutes later...started acting up again. Can the cable come in and out of adjustment like that?

Here is my main question. I have heard many ideas thrown around about the cause of this problem. Servos, valves, etc. Can someone post links to any info sites that explain how all of the components work? Or even explain what parts are most likely to be the cause? Everyone calls them different things... Govenors, servos, and then there are corvette servos... I figured if we can kind of combine all of that, ill be able to fix my problem...as well as help some other folks out. I also dont even know where some of the parts are located in the tranny. Some answers are just like "Replace the servo.... Ok" I tried to search....maybe not hard enough.

If someone can help that'd be awsome. I just spent all summer trying to get this car to pass emissions so I can drive it, now its giving me problems. Thanks in advance.

Justin

sounds like there's some varnish in there.. and the govenor's getting stuck. i'd put some "trans X" or some other type of stabilizer stuff in there. i'd put that in there and give it a go.. sounds like either the govenor or a valve in the body. put some of those things in there.

If the fluid is in good shape do not add any Trans-X as this will finish off the transmission. Check the TV cable setting first, it should be tight at WOT. If there is something is going away in the unit, it could cause the throttle valve to stick in different positions, thereby giving you this scenario. The TV cable should move freely, and not bind anywhere. If it does then this is the problem, it will need to be replaced. There are certain circumstances where Trans-X can work, but this is not one of them.

Thanks for all your replys. I suspected the TV cable so I adjusted it. The day it was acting up, I drove it for about an hour to get it home. About 1/2 mile from my house, it started shifting normally again. So yesterday I took her out for the first time after it was acting up......everything is fine. Actually the car is running/shifting better than it has in awhile. I did adjust the cable though just to be sure. Its still making that weird noise that I posted about tho... Im convinced it is my torque converter making the noise. This trans just has to last me til I can finish my motor/tranny swap...or atleast until winter when I wont be driving it much. Thanks again!
