Hi, i just purchased a rear end from a swap meet. I've already pulled the cover and counted the gears, (3.73 posi) but I was also curious as to what the rear end was out of originally. Is there an axle code chart to decode the axle code stamped on the tube?
The code appears to be 6HT

I have found several rear axles with the 3.73 gears however none of them have the "6HT" code. So far the only "6HT" coded rear that I have found is a 2.73 gear limited slip rear. It may have been converted over to the higher ratio. The axle itself is listed for a 1988 camaro with cast iron drums. It is also on the 89 camaros with a teeth ring gear pinion of 41:15 and is also a limited slip with cast iron drums.

 

okay thanks trickster. Tooth count is definatly 41/11 and is a drum brake with 26 spline axles. I suppose it's okay that someone swapped in the gears at one time or another. Anything visually i should check before installing the carrier into my rear end. (i'll put in new bearings and axle seals)

PS: can't just swap rear ends cause someone cut the brackets off this rear.
