83 model 700r4 compared to 91 model
I have found a 83 reduilt 700r4, but my car is a 91 with the electronic speedo. I think the 83 has a cable driver speedo, and I am not sure how much of a problem it will be to make it work? Is there any other things that make the 83 different from the 91? Can the speedo be made to work without a lot of trouble?

You can take the speedo gears and sleeve from the 83 and put them on the 91 with no problems. The 83 will have a different spline count on the input shaft than the 91, so you'd need a different torque converter. There were numerous internal changes over the years, but nothing you'd need to be especially worried about.
You could run into some serious problems if you are lookeing to use the tranny for any length of time, if you drive the car hars or even babying it. There are numerous difference, the 91 tranny is calibrated for the car. The governer and valve body in the 83 are calabrated differently unless the cars came with the same engine and rear end {doubt that}. you can swap the governers which will help some, but probably not enough. The 91 has a much newer valvebody set up, it will have a auxillary valve body in it. The 83 will have a plate in place of it. It will bolt up and it will shift but they have come a long way since 83. The best tranny to have built is the one out of the car, or even newer, but not older. the older trannys had a lot more 3-4 pack problems.. hope the info helps...
