Is the 700R4 hard to rebuild ? I was a mechanic many years ago and did everything except trans rebuilding. I am now an HVAC Tech and I am extremely mechanically inclined. In my mechanic days, we always replaced trnsmissions with rebuilt ones from a tranny shop. After checking around, I have decided that a trans rebuild is not worth the $1200 to $1400 that the tranny shops charge. My Iroc-Z has 97k miles on it and the fluid smells burnt. The fluid and filter were changed about 7k miles ago. It doesn't slip or make odd noises. The TV cable is bad and requires an adjustment every couple of days. I got a new one but it's a little tough to change it with a wimpy jack and jack stands.

 

I am currently in trans school to learn the black magic of trans overhaul. My teacher says NOTHING is harder than the 700 r-4. Requires about $500 woth of special tool. Our final test will be this trans. He says it separates the men from the boys due to all the clutch packs contained in the input drum.

 

Run down to Autozone and pick up a GM auto tranny manual....you get rebuilding and theory for th e350. 400, 200 and 700 as well as 2 FWD tranny's. Is the one with the Blue cover for about $20. Goes into AWESOME detail!!
