Getting new rearend, what should I look for..

I'll be driving about 250 miles to pick up a Borg Warner 9 bolt rearend. It has about 5000 miles on it after a rebuild, disc brakes, positraction, and 3.27 gears.

I have almost no knowledge about rearends, but from what the guy tells me, it is a pretty good part, with pretty much nothing wrong with it. He's selling it for $400OBO (what should I offer him?)

What should I look for when I go to get it? Is there anything that would tell me whether or not it's damaged?

visual inspection of internal part and any rough spots as you spin it by hand, but really unless something is bad wrong you may not see it.
