T5 - T56 Swap
I am looking to swap out my T-5 Transmission for TREMEC’s GM aftermarket replacement T-56. I have been doing some research and i found that i will deffinetly need a new cross member, which i have found for $150, plus the price of the transmission which is about $2300. But here is the part i get mixed signals about:
CHP magazeen did an artical on the transmission and said "And for anyone with a third-generation Camaro and T5 trans, this tranny requires no clutch modifications. This T56 conversion will require a crossmember modification" this lead me to believe it was pretty much going to fall right into place, but another website said this about the T56:
The major benefit to the Retrofit T56 is that it allows you to use a standard style clutch and bellhousing. It also has a mechanical speedometer sender which is similar to the 700R4 & T5 transmission (an electric 700R4 & T5 VSS will bolt right in). The draw backs are that the transmission is 1.9" longer, so the driveshaft and torque arm must be shortened. It is available new from Tom Sallee at Sallee Chevrolet for $2295.

If this is true, then im not intereste in getting involved with the driveshaft ant torque arm, but i would really like this transmission, does anyone know if this is true, and can anyone lead me in the right direction as to what parts i would need to complete this project?

If worst comes to worst, i can just take the cheaper and easier alternative and get my T-5 Rebuilt, its just that its really falling apart and i could use the 6th gear for highway travel, and i dont want to put all my money into a rebuild when down the road im going to want to drop in a bigger engine, id rather do it right the first time.

Sounds like two different T-56s. If you get one from a 93-97 F-body, you will not need to change the length of your driveshaft.
You can buy a kit from
F-body Motorsports, but you will need other things. A clutch, the flywheel will need to be resurfaced, may as well replace the rear main seal and get a roller pilot bearing, an aftermarket crossmember which can be bought from spohn or the F-body Motorsports includes a new crossmember, a tranny mount which can be bought from summit, and more, but that's all I can think of now.
