700r4 rebuild
My trans. is finally dying in my 86 iroc. I am about to rebuild it myself. I have done a few th350's but no 700r4's. Is there anything special I should know ( tools, tips etc..) before i start????

I took my 700R4 over to dad's and we rebuilt it. It was not hard at all really. I did have to weld together a huge C-clamp at work in order to press in the cover for the servo, and it ended up being a great press for the dissassembly and reassembly of the sprung internals.
If you change over to a beast shell, get the Art Carr shell as they provide a torington bearing and it is a drop in with no mods, and theirs is hardened. (when I bought it, they told me that not all beast shells are hardened, not sure how true this is or not but it was worth getting the torington bearing and being a drop in part and knowing it was hardened)
I also upgraded to the Art Carr hardened input shaft and stator support, 5 gear rear planet set, .500 boost valve, corvette servo, B-Car Fix (Part #8673948) for WOT upshift into OD, and TCI racing overhaul.
I left the stock 10 vane pump in place but now realize it would have been real cheap to upgrade to the 4L60E's 13 vane pump. I wish that I had done it.
I also used a B&M shift kit. If I had the choice to do it again I would use the TransGo kit.
Make sure you replace the tail shaft bushing in the tail shaft housing that supports the yoke. I tore apart my 700R4 and the tranny had 104,000.0 mi. on it and the clutches looked like new but that bushing had a lot of slop in it.
Hope this helps.
Oh yea, when you go to measure the end play on the input shaft make sure you have the gasket in place when you install the pump, I didn't and ended up having .010 shaved off the selective washer for the input drum only to find out my dum a$$ didn't have to. lol!!

700r4 yikes! hearing anyone say " i just blew up my 700" makes me imagine hes saying" im goona get it rebuilt by this guy who used to build top fuel cars in the 60's .......in tibet...he and my dad used to smuggle **** freedom fighters for that canadian kevin bacon guy to build an army of hippie fascists together. he knows everything there is to know about "trannys" like where to pick one up and how to not look suprised when they take off there pants, he just never learned to read...... and he invented the chicken nuggets, but general motors wont give him a job because they dont sell no frickin chickin nuggets"
but seriously, every time someone breaks one, i get ready to cring at the price there"transmission guy" charged them. thats why i gave up on them and whent to a 350. its really cool your goning to do it yourself. good luck! at least you wont have to worry about someone ripping you off.
