powertrac "posi" who's got one???

Anyone install or seen the powertrac posi they installed in that wagon build up on HP TV???

It some new unit cost $450, its just a spider gear replacement. No special tools needed, install in the drive way. It acts like a posi when going straight but turns back into a peg leg when turning.

I've seen it, but havn't heard how well they perform. I think they are a bit pricey and I installed my zexel torsen without special tools and in my driveway, took about 45 minutes .

But how does the torsioin work???

I am not thinking about my car really. Thiking of making my motorcycle into a trike. A normal peg leg wouldn't be as easy to yank a wheelie. But posi would be to hard to turn.

The powertrax unit is not a posi, it's a locker. I used to run one till it broke, didn't bother getting a new one under warranty since I was planning on getting a 9 inch (which I now have )

What broke? sheared a key?

They said on HP TV that if it broke you could still drive home.

Its why they chose it for that chevell wagon.

It has a moster motor n 4000lb easy. so I assume its strong.

I was gonna try to get a blown motor 3rd gen for parts. That way the rear end cost me like $25. Its need major fab. The pig must be off center for drive shaft hook up.

A stock 3rd gen rear is plenty strong for a 750 with mods.
cheap enough to hack up.

Your 9in was what $900

I put a PowerTrax locker in the rear of my ElCamino (7.5" 10 bolt).
It has a 383 stroker and a TH-350 with a nasty shift kit.
After cruising around getting used to the lock and unlock feeling, I decided to romp down on it... The first time I hit second gear, It unlocked and damn near put the car in the ditch. I went back and installed the super stiff springs. It didn't help.
Again, it unlocked and I was in the grass on the side of road trying to steer my way out of trouble.
When I got home, I pulled the cover to check every thing out. When I got the "locker" out I found that all of the teeth were eaten up. Instead of having square corners on the dog teeth, they were radiused. Everytime I applied some serious power it would unlock.

i pulled it out, threw it away and went with an Auburn Posi unit. Just had to swap the ring gear, and set the backlash. After checking, the gear pattern was perfect so I buttoned it up and never looked back. It has worked flawlessly.

I would never buy another PowerTrax Locker.

I have one, it was in the camaro and has been in the bird for a couple years. I havent had any issues with mine it works perfect.

In the install kit they send a little woodfuff key called "go and no go key" If you install the unit and there is slop in the keyway it needs shims added or it will strip.

Thing is... If I has a trike. Id ride and travel all year round. There would be many times where I would need posi to keep form getting stuck [like an ATV] But turning would suffer for a posi all the time.

Maybe run a 4x4 front rear backwards, with lockers. Could ya run with only one locked???

There's a tab on one of the paddles as they call it, it snaped and jammed the passenger side open. The only wheel that was driving was the driver's side. Made it weird driving home cause it would pull to the one side of the road. The rest of the unit looked in great shape except for where the bits got jammed up. A clutch style posi is probably what you would need on a trike.

Yea you would probably be better off with some sort of limited slip unit for a trike. You might look into a gov lock "grenade lock" unit. I doubt you will see enough traction to pop one.

Maybe the units are different for an 84 7.5 in a G-body and a newer 7.5 in an F-body, but there was no keyway on the PowertraX unit. There is a spec for "slop" and that tolerance was within spec.

Not a keyway, it's a go/no go block to measure the gap between the 2 halfs. The block comes with the powertrax unit. This pic is from the day mine broke.
