Rear end/gear Ideas??

In my 87 iroc i have a 700r-4 with the 3:24 limited slip gears. There are no problems with the rear end but its time for an upgrade....I like the gearing as it is now( ABOUT rpm's @ 2700 at 80mph) what would a 3:73 gear to do my car at higher speeds?? Anyone ever do the Powertracs locker??? Please shoot some ideas fo what was done to your rides.....

Re: Rear end/gear Ideas??

3.73 is usually too much for a TPI car. A shorter gear(numerically higher) promotes power at higher rpm, which your motor does not have. 3.42 seems to be viewed as the best all-around performance gear for a street TPI car. - there are calculators on this forum to figure rpm vs gear ratio, do a search. FYI a 700r4 has a .70 OD(4th gear) ratio.

Stay away from any form of a locker with a 10-bolt. Lockers have a way of breaking c-clip axles and sending them out of the car around corners.

If you do indeed have 3.23's, then you have a 10-bolt, not the stonger/hard to find anything for 9-bolt.

Awesome-thanks!!

I'd like to stay with the 10bolt. Mabey just a freshen-up of the gears(just replacement of the gears/axles/seals) See just like any of us I don't want to replace any thing and have "replacment remorse" and living with a set-up I hate . Thanks again for the imput

If the rear axle assembly is NOT broke, just leave it alone. Why ask for problems. You will know when something needs replacement.

Ya know...thank you-I usually stick to that motto "if it ain't broke-don't fix it" I figured upgrade....why not, but the more stories I hear...the more things I see/hear going wrong than right.
