TH350 or TH400???
Got a dilemma on my hands. I have a friend of mine that has a used TH400 that he got from my cousin a few months back that my cousin pulled from a 72 GMC pickup. I know it works and it hasnt been in a vehicle since. A few weeks ago, I asked him what he wanted for it and he said 150. I politely told him thanks, but no thanks, as I could snag a TH350 for around that price and Ive heard rumors that TH350s are better for my 305. The other day he called me and asked if I wanted to buy it and I told him I didnt really want to for 150 and he said he'd take an offer for alot cheaper, around 75-100. Now, to me thats a great deal, cause the 700 in my 82 is pretty much shot and cost me some races and possibly sweet runs at the track. So, heres my question(s):
Which is better for my 82 T-top, the TH350 or TH400?
Now, If I buy this tranny (TH400) for say 100, Ill attempt to go snag a generic stall for around 100-150 at the local speed shop. My rear end gears are 3.08, to the best of my knowledge. Non posi. Heres my choices:
1. buy the TH400 for 75-100, go grab a stall for around 150 and put it in the Camaro this weekend....my problem is, what would I have to do to make this work? (crossmember, torque arm mount, etc) is there a kit you can grab or am I looking at custom fabbing stuff?
2. Buy this deal in the local paper, a TH350, rebuilt, warranty, $250 w/exchange (bye bye old 700), snag a stall for around 100-150 and this will take me about 2 more weeks to attain as I already do have a site for the adapter kit for this, which runs $150. And money doesnt grow on trees lol.
SO, will the TH400 hurt my Camaros power or will it not make a difference? Meaning, if I use a TH400 over a TH350, will it make my car run slower than the TH350 would? Also, what kind of things will I have to change to be able to use my Speedo? Sorry this is worded kinda sloppy, I just got off working a 12 hour day and Im really tired and worn out but I want to ask your opinions before throwing my money down. thanks again.

.
go with the 350 turbo it takes less power to spin it the 400 is a littler stronger but the 350 turbo is alot stronger then the 700 r4 and the 305 don't make to much power so i would go 350 turbo if i were you!

Btw, did you or someone before you swap in a 700r4 into the 82? The 200c was the stocker junk trans for that car.

I had to do that swap. First got the car, I stripped down my blown 85 hardtop to build this T-top and it needed a tranny.....that was a Saturday nightmare, didnt have a tranny jack, so I had to hold the tranny up while my cousin put the bellhousing bolts in. I do still have the stock crossmember i believe. I assume Ill be buying the TH350 then, because my car really needs the tranny and carb and then its done....for now

I love my TH400, it's one of the better ones you can get. I bought it knowing that there would be a big block in front of it some day (there's a 427 sitting in the garage now) and there was no way I could pass up the deal I got on the trans. It came out of a buddy's car that was making 1000 hp and had been just gone through by www.mikestransmission.com . A TH350 would be better in your situation. They can handle some power too if built right, just not enough for what I'll be doing.

Not to mention throwing a TH350 by yourself is doable...the TH400 will kick your azz
For what your wanting the TH350 is the perfect solution. The price seems more than fair that your getting it for also, throw in a $50 shift kit, little higher stall and your good to go.

So, do you think a stock rebuilt TH350 with a 2800 stall would be good? Reason Im asking is, if it will help me out big time, then I might try to postpone this race my buddy is wanting to do wednesday. He told me to bring out my Camaro to take on his Lincoln one more time.....the 700 is an aggravating thing, thought it may be in the Detent cable....not sure at all but anywho, HOpefully I will be snagging that TH350 up here within the next 2-3 weeks.....GOt a Deal on an Edelbrock Fuel Injection setup, complete with a Walbro 255 Fuel pump, wiring harness and everythingt I need too hook it up...and at 250 bucks, I cant pas it up, itll be sweet on my RS next year :bigthumb:

now why didn't I think of that
The guy who built the trans thought I was abusing the hell out of it to fry the sucker so many times... I kept asking how the hell can a 305 do that to a TH400? 1st and reverse were coming on at the same time 2 of the times and the last time I lost reverse and 3rd. Oh and had a stuck govenor twice

A stock rebuild should be fine for what you have now, might consider a good shift kit though to firm up the shifts. When you drive around normaly it'll be smooth shifting with that converter but once you romp on the go fast pedal, you'll get some nice firm shifts.

With my second set-up that's all I ran was a stock TH350 with a new Trans-Go rebuild kit and B&M shift kit plus a 3500 stall. Shifts were great, 60' times were good considering the small motor and is currently taking up space in the shed for the next project or buyer. So long as a good guy/shop is doing the rebuild they will be able to notice any llittle thing that may cause a future problem and address it before they bolt the pump back on permanately.
A freind of mine kept having issues with his TH400 in his BBC 70 chevelle. Would not shift right at all, long story short after 3 times pulling it apart, the builder took it to a guy 2 hrs south of here and they spend the entire day going over everything inside the tranny. Come to find out it was a worn out area of the actual tranny case internally that was casuing the problems. First time for both of them to see any problems of that nature, so even guys that have been at this a long time still learn something new.
But yeah, only tranny I'd even consider behind a 305 would be the new Lencomatic
