700r4? features

I have a '91 RS I bought just over a year ago. This is a great site, I've been reading the posts here for almost as long.

Shortly after buying my car I had to replace the automatic transmission. At the time, all I could afford was a used one from a junkyard. Before it failed, I could place the gear selector in first. I could accelerate until almost redline, then the car would shift into second (with the selector still in first). It would continue to accelerate, until I let off of the gas, in which case, it would shift back down to first as soon as the car was traveling slow enough. Is this a computerized tranny? or is it some kind of shift kit?

My new transmission does something interesting as well. I believe it is a 700r4. At any speed, I can drop it into first and it will coast. I can rev the engine, but it will not transmit power to the wheels until it is rev'd up to the rpm that matches the car's speed in that gear. Does anybody else have this feature on their Camaros?

One more question...I have recently started to experience a terrible rattle from the area of the torque converter when it is not engaged. I have been told it sounds like loose torque converter bolts. Assuming that is the case, will I have to drop the transmission to fix it, or can these be tightened just by removing the cover? Chilton's is silent in regards to torque converters. I appreciate any information.
