A few questions about a TH-350
I pulled the T5 out of my 84 z28, tore it apart and things didnt look so good.So i decided to go with a mildly built th350. i did a few searches and didnt find all the info i need. i know the driveshaft will have to be replaced, but i know a guy who can do that for me. The crossmember will be no problem either. the questions i have are: what year th350 will fit into a non computer controlled 84z28. Im also wondering if the long or short tail will matter, because im going to get a new driveshaft made anyway. im lookin at a 1972 th350 long tail and was wondering if there would be any fitment issues if i tried to use it in my car. im planning on doing a complete rebuild on the tranny and switching to a manual valve body. im figuring with the manual valve body and the age of the tranny that i wont need any kind of computers or controls for this, am i right? Also what year trannies are the best for what i want to do with it... could i use a newer tranny and not have to worry about any electronics? i appreciate any info you guys give me on this topic, thanks alot.

hey, i just talked to a buddy of mine and he said i can have his th350 for free, but its out of a mid 80s monte carlo. i dont know if they come stock in those cars but would this tranny also suit my needs? thanks again.
As far as I know, none of the TH-350's are computer controlled. They all hook up to a vaccum line instead. I dont think you'll have any problems on your non computer car. I only know of 2 versions of the TH-350, the regular one (for performance) and the TH-350 C model with converter lockup (came out of trucks). As long as its not the TH-350C then you'll be good to go, alot of manual valve bodies out there will work. Consider the reverse pattern, it will be much easier to drive on the street (slipping in and out of neutral). If you have the TH-350C then you're stuck like me, no manual valve bodies, only shift kits.
If the one you have is a longtail then you can re-use a 700R4 driveshaft. Since you said you pulled your T5, I'm assuming you didnt have a 700R4. So I'm not sure if the T5 driveshaft would work. Compare the price of your friend to getting a used 700R4 driveshaft in a yard. You will need to get a torque arm conversion kit. A few companies make them, try a search for more info.
For me, the hardest part of the install was, believe it or not, the stupid dipstick tube. Talk about getting frusturated with what seems like such a simple install ....

Someone else going to join the th350 club, huh? I have a suggesetion for you, can really make life easy, and it doesnt cost very much.

If you get this, it comes with a 700r4 output shaft, that you install into the th350 in question. Then all you need is a 700r4 tailshaft, which you can get at a junkyard real cheap. Then you can keep the factory torque arm, and all the other stuff.
This is great for auto guys, but since you are running a manual trans, you may not want to go for this setup. The only thing you would need is the tailshaft so its not too bad, just a little more work. It still beats those bracket kits to mount the torque arm, and screwing with a driveshaft, etc.

82 Tailhousing
Installing a th350 in 82 Z. Need tailhousing that torque arm will bolt too. Chevrolet doesnt offer them anymore. Can anyone tell me how to make this connection w/o using the changeover kit? Car was originally a 4 spd standard car. Please advise!!!!!
You need to do a changeover kit. Either that or run a different torque arm that mounts to the frame or crossmember (which is even more expensive). Either go with the one ljnowell posted (would be perfect for a short-tail TH350) or one of the other ones out there, B&M, Hurst, etc. I used the Hurst one, and although I hate it because its really lame for $80, it works.
