I seriously want to make my car a manual but I won't be able to buy a t56.
Since it would be easier and cheaper for me to get a t-5 is there a way I can make that handle gobs more tq and hp?

Not really much you can do, since the case itself is the biggest problem. A four speed would be a good way to go though. I'm going to be installing a T-10 four speed in my Z28 in the spring. Lighter and stronger than any T5, but no OD gear like the T5 and T56.

You could change the t-5 guts out for G-Force parts, they say it's good for about 600 HP. Here is the website http://www.gforcetransmissions.com/tran_gt-5.asp
Why don't you want a T-56? Nothing you do to beef up a T-5 is going to be cheap.
*edit* nevermind, I misread your post. I'd wait until you can get a T-56, because the G-Force kit cost almost as much as what you can get one for, and you'll be better off with the 6 speed.

Contact TKOPerformance at BigRedK5Blazer@aol.com; they'll rebuild a WC T5 using forged parts to handle 400/450 ft. lbs./hp for about $700 plus shipping.
I dunno, I would rather build a T5 instead of doing the T56 swap. From a price standpoint, you also gotta consider the rest of the parts needed for the T56 conversion. I guess its worth it if you want a 6 speed and thats that. But if you're happy with a 5 speed and you just need it stronger then building the T5 and retaining all the rest of the stock equipment is probably the cheaper way to go. I know thats the way I'm going with 2 of my cars (both of which were/are auto)

Well, I wouldn't think they'd do a non-WC T5, but give them a try. They know their stuff.
As far as ID'ing trannies, RB83L69 has posted fotos of the differences in T5's--very obvious when you see the front covers. Do a search for those fotos if you can.
As far as expense and hassle for the T56 conversion, well, if you're into it, the T56 is the ultimate indestructible tranny; but it weighs about 50 lbs more than a T5, requires a bunch of proprietary clutch stuff and fabrication, shifts slower than a T5, and Chevy High Performance magazine says that if you're running a carb and a mild cam you should have at least 4.10 in the rear so you can put it in sixth--basically a smog tranny. I have one in a street rod but it's sort of a conversation piece--might go back to the Muncie M21. My Camaro will remain a T5--but it's a cruiser, not a drag racer.
If you have EFI a T56 would probably give you great mileage.

A nice close ratio 5 speed with an OD for mileage would be great.
Even better if it was linear like a motorcycle. Ditch the shift pattern for more speed.

The G-FORCE kit kicks butt I have 20k miles on mine and I beat on it like there is no tomorrow and with the rebuild video from www.hanlonmotorsports.com it was fairly easy to do and when I did run into a problem the people at hanlon were amazingly helpful, Service sells in my book. and with a T-5 it looks stock no new clutch crap no new x member, driveshaft, torque arm and you don't have to figure out all that vehicle speed sensor crap, anyway yeah
just my 2 cents

Someone who wants to put 4.10 or higher gears in the rear and still get good gas mileage on the highway.
