You have to look at the companies that make the converters too. Some of the high dollar products come from better companies... They will work with your combo and make sure you get the converter you're looking for than just picking one off the shelf. Also companies like Precesion Industries use higher grade parts that's why they cost more.
When I bought my ACT converter from pro-built (no longer sell it) Dana took my cam, CI, gears, intake, and other things into consideration before selecting a converter speed.
Also another thing most people seem to over look is the diameter size of the converters. Stock is a 12" converter, the smaller diameter you get a slight bump in the 60 foot time (from the multiplier) and also you get less strain put on the drivetrain.
As for me I'm running a 9.5" ACT 2400 right now. It ran right around 500 bucks, but due to problems in the past with the company they are over looked now. Mine has been problem free though.

Convertors are the last thing people want to spend money on, but also fail to realize it's just as important, no more important, than that $400 set of headers, $300 set of roller rockers, $200 intake, etc...really good convertors are expensive and you will get what you pay for. I realize the budget thing and options have to be weighed out, but cheap is often not the best solution. $400 for a name brand convertor is not unreasonable by any means.
Most of the cheaper brands I've seen run have more slippage and that's one thing you dont need since that turns into heat build up and later turns into another tranny build up.
