I pulled my t-5 yesterday to replace the TOB. when i slide the trans off the bellhousing i noiticed that one of the ears that hold the trans to the bell was broken. does anyone know what would cause this.

 

Using the trans bolts to draw the trans into the clutch/bellhousing without everything lined up first. The ear gets stress risers from the force being exerted on it, and then cracks later due to vibration. You can probably get it heli-arc welded back on for about $50 or so at a welding shop.

 

well every time i have had to pull the trans we have just lifted and pushed. so i know it is not from me doing it. but that doesn't mean that some one else didn't do it in the past. but there where no cracks or any thing the last time i pulled it. will this effect clutch disengament or anything else?

 

This is a bad situation. With a broken ear you are putting the force designed for 4 bolts on just 3, and only one bolt on one side means that it takes all of the force on that side. It won't affect clutch action, at least not until the other ear breaks and then maybe something really bad happens.

You should really just get the broken ear welded back onto the case. It's not a big deal as long as it's a clean break which it usually is. I've had several Muncies fixed this way over the years, and have seen a lot of transmissions fixed like this with both aluminum and cast iron cases.

 

well i will try to get it fixed as soon as i can. right now i am jobless so i will have to wait to get the income to get it fixed. thanks for the help.

Take it easy on it and it should be okay for at least the short term.
