T-5 Speedo Gears and Sleeve, Problem?
I sent a speedo head into a GM service center for repair/calibration. I've cleaned and lubed the speedo cable housing and cable itself twice, but I still having a bouncing needle of some 5 mph at 75, which on a 145 speedo seems a lot. Do I simply need to replace the speedo cable or could the speedo gears (drive, driven) and/or sleeve be the problem? I'm fishing for anwsers.

Hey James. I had somewhat similar problems on my 87 SS (120mph speedo; speedo guts are similar but different)
I had all new GM speedo gears / sleeve & speedo cable. Well I have repaired speedometers before so I pulled the speedo and upon disassembly, I found the trip odometer cluster to be faulty and locking up. It would do a click thing every so often, or it would work fine, or it would do as you described. I installed a new trip odometer cluster as the rest of the speedo checked out fine and my speedo has worked great ever since.

The GM service center took care of the trip as well when I sent the speedo head in, so that shouldn't be the problem. The followin link is my fix to that particular GM screw-up. By the way, thanks for the sleeve and gear. I picked up a new OEM speedo cable today, but since the high here in Kansas was mid-twenties or so, I'll probably not attempt any repairs for a few months.

Gotcha. Yeah mine don't have that j-clip (or related problem) the trip odo cluster was just randomly siezing up. Cable is a good possibility then.

By the way, when I replace the sleeve, will I get a flood or dribble?
