It really depends on what type power you got in the engine, rear gearing, and useage of car
The th-400 is a much much stronger trans. No question about that.
But do you have the power to kill 700r4's (it really don't take much to kill stock ones)
Can you live with out the overdrive? Thats one of the biggest question you have to answer. The non overdrive will cause your highway RPM to be higher, more nosie from the engine on the highway, less fuel mileage. But you will have a trans you aint gonna kill no time soon.
If you do the th-400 swap, remember you will need to have your driveshaft shortened, or get one from a 82-83 with the 3 speed auto.
And you'll need a th-400 swap kit/crossmember/torque arm mount.
I used the $125 hurst kit to put my th-400 in
And you'll need a front bastard U joint. The th-400 slip ypke takes a bigger U joint than the camaro driveshafts so you have to get a front joint that has both size caps.
All in all you'll save quite a bit of money by installing the th-400 if you already have it.
$125 +9 for shipping on the swap kit
$50 to have your shaft cut down or buy a used one in a junkyard
$15 for a front U joint
But do you have a torque converter fr the th-400? A 700r4 converter will not work
To get a pretty well rebuild job on a 700r4 your looking at $700-1000. That would be rebuilt and upgraded some
