Auto Trans question
Hey guys, there is a problem with my transmission but not sure what it is, when I use the car for the first time of the day, putting it into drive it takes about 2 seconds to go into gear, but it is fine after that, changes gears normally and goes into "D" gear normally if I drive it more then 2 times a day etc. going into passing gear it seemed like it was in neutral until I let off the gas a little to get out of passing gear. Now my question is, would a fully tranny flush fix this problem or? my firebird is an '88 with about 207 km's on it, apparently it recently had a tune-up before I got it but the trans fluid smells burnt and is discoloured. I'm hoping a tranny flush will fix it, but I'd like all your guy's input on this. Thanks alot for any help/replies in advance :-)

Given that yu live in Canada I'll bet the problem you are experiencing at start up is related to the cold, not the trans. It's been bitter cold the last week here in Delaware, so I can only imagine what it's like up there. The fluid has different properties when its cold, so it takes a minute for everything to work right.
If the fluid smells burnt and is brown instead of red then it's definately time for a fluid change. If the fluid has small particles of metal in it, or looks grayish then the trans has been damaged. I would start with a flush and fluid replacement operation. Just dropping the pan and changing what comes out isn't effective. You want to get all the fluid out and put all new fluid back in.

Thanks TKO, that's what I thought. But the trans has been like that since I got it a few months ago, and the weather was still somewhat kind of warm :-)
