26 to 28 spline carrier
Hey guys I gotta quick question.
I currently have a 7.5in 10 bolt rear end with a 26 spline carrier. I bought a ring gear for my 26 spline carrier but I am going to upgrade to a 28 spline carrier. Will this ring gear work with the 28 spline carrier?
Thanks. J.

The 7.5/7.625 carrier doesn't care about the gears. The spline count is only in the side gears. A complete carrier swap with axles can use the original gears. A simple side gear swap from 26 to 28 spline though may not work. The hole in the carrier that the axles go through was smaller for the 26 spline axles. 28 spline axle carriers have a larger hole.
Mostly everyone just buys a 28 spline carrier (posi etc) and installs some 28 spline axles for a third gen. 90-92 factory axles will work in any third gen 10 bolt housing when a 28 spline carrier is used but factory axles are still weaker and any aftermarket ones.
Go ahead and buy a 28 spline carrier and axles. Your gears will work fine on the new carrier. You can buy 28 spline axles from www.tomsdifferentials.com for about $125 each. They're listed for 90-92 third gens but as I already mentioned, they can be used in any third gen.
