question for a tranny master..

Just out of morbid curosity...

i put this TH400 in my T/A just a few months back, i had the pan off and cleaned as well as the tranny flushed. i put approx 30-60 miles on it before it started slipping, and aside from moving it from parking spot to spot it hasn't been driven much since the slipping started. I dropped my pan on saturday and found about 1/8" of thick black sludge on the bottom of the pan, as well as the tranny fluid (Type F) was thick like syrup.

Am i wrong to assume that the sludge is actually material from the bands ?

(The tranny is getting replaced on Friday anyways.. Just curious)

Thanks!

Trans Sludge

Purp:

The thick sludge you mention could be from the clutches and bands in the unit. Is the sludge sticking to the magnet? You are running a magnet in your pan, are you not? Another possible source is the pump. Sometimes, the torque converter doesn't get installed properly, or is severely ballooned and tears the pump out. With the trans bolted to the block, you should be able to move the converter front to back at least 1/8", and no more than 3/8". We see many trannys destroyed when someone attempts to "draw it in with the bolts". When you cleaned and flushed the unit, did you check that the cooler and lines flowed freely? Not just cold, but also when warm.

Lets us know what you find.

Don.

well.....

she went off for a pro built TH400 HD with a 2500 stall today. He's gonna take apart the old tranny and let me know, but he said it was probably the bands and clutches.

i can't wait to see what kind of difference a higher stall makes
