The length of the clutch gear

What it would take to install one, is a LS1.

If you're going to mate it up to a pre-98 motor, it needs to be the LT1 variety.

Input shaft and front case plate. Replace both and reshim the trans to change the parts out.

There are a handful of ways to use an LS1 T56 behind a Gen I or Gen II SBC. I'll come back later and elaborate.

Which means:

Yes can can make a LS1 transmission fit a Gen 1 SBC. You buy 2 transmissions. One is the one (LS1) that doesn't fit your car, one (LT1) is the one that does. You take them both apart; put the parts out of the one that fits, into the one that doesn't; now it fits. Throw away the remaining parts, or if you're lucky, sell them. Don't bet on it.

Or, just buy one transmission, specifically the one that fits; don't take any transmissions apart at all; and don't throw away any transmissions.

So even though something is possible, it may not be practical, or at best, certainly not the wisest route to take.

Just get the right transmission in the first place, and forget about the LS1 ones.

There are adapter plates so that the LT1 trans. parts are not necessary. I'll let you know how that goes on a friends SBC.

just get one from McLeod.. same LT1 length.. but has the better push type clutch like the LS1.. the LT1 had the pull type.

better gearing from McLeod, plus the steel forks, and viper input shaft.. 1st gear is 2.97 with a final of .63 the lt1 has a .50 final i forgot the 1st..

OK, so LS1's defenatly wil not fit....what are the external diffreances that are easy to see, I'm trying to get all my parts lined up before I get back, but the only way I have is through my father and online, and some people don't know what they have and all I have to go on is pics.
