Proper way of installing a torque converter?

Just unbolt it from the flexplate, slide it off, and put the new one in? Run the car in park and fill transmission to proper specs? I'll have the engine out of the car when I install it.

Make sure the tangs on the converter shaft engage the rotor in the front pump. If you look inside the front pump around the stator shaft, youll see where teh converter engages it. Pretty much the TC should slide all the way in without much effort, other then that needed to hold it up. Oh, dont forget to prefill the TC with ATF before you install it.

Also a good idea to pull the front pump, disassemble the two halves, and inspect. Its not real hard to do, jsut need a puller. I wish I had pulled mine when I had the chance. The bushing that the converter rode on failed and the converter tilted sideways, causing the rotor to eat into the front pump housing.

make sure to spin the TC good and make sure it sinks pretty deep into the tranny bellhousing. if you go to bolt the tranny to the engine and it won't go flush, stop!, do not use the bolts to pull it in. this will result in a broken bellhousing.

Since you are r/r the converter, might as well replace the front seal on the tranny.

For that price you might as well replace both the front and rear seal in the tranny. Be careful on how you remove and install the old seal.

The converter will be fully engaged in the pump when you CANNOT fit your fingers between the bottom of the converter and the case. A good tranny friend told me this.
